On Bended Knee ’08

I would like to start by saying the following:

I personally feel that the story, my own testimony, which I have learned throughout making this ‘album’, I feel is a lot more meaningful than the music itself. While I do hope that you are blessed by the music you hear, I furthermore hope that you are able to learn a bit more about God through this album, just as I have.

In all honesty, this was originally supposed to have been a ‘Full’ Christmas Album release (meaning, more than 4 songs!), with what I had hoped to contain large amounts of orchestration and instrumentation, to be recorded with various people. Oops! Sorry, that didn’t happen…

God has been teaching me a lot recently, and I have learned the following:

We are all broken, imperfect people. As ourselves, we can never be completely satisfied. Only with God–and the joy of his salvation, are we made whole. Sometimes, we need to be reminded of our brokenness, so that we can only turn to God for strength, and humble ourselves before Him.

Sometimes, in fact, a lot of the time, we may not know what to do in many situations. We long to see what the future holds, yet, we often do not. I think that this has a lot to do with God wanting us to trust in Him, in every small step. If we knew the future, we may not feel the need to rely and trust in Him. God, who is all powerful, and who has the best plan for us, holds the future in His hands. Isn’t that enough to know?

And especially in these situations when we may not know what is happening, or when things don’t seem to be going the way we think it should, we should not try to hold on to them. Let go instead of what we have, and let God deal with it. He can bless us so much more through this, and give us a peace we can never imagine, even if we do not understand why things happen the way they do. Surrender everything to Him, into his arms, and let Him guide us in everything that we do.

Let Him change us and mould us day by day, in both the small things AND the big things of life!

About the Music

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a random collection of different music – two Christmas carols, one Malay/Indonesian song, and one popular Christmas song! However, I still want to release them all together as they are =)

The Christmas carols are some of my favorite, I’m just sad that I didn’t manage to do the others which I had planned on doing! I hope you enjoy ‘Kau Yang Terindah’, which is a ‘indah’ (beautiful) song, in my opinion, even if you do not understand it! (I have included a loose translation of the lyrics)

The Music

Sorry if the mixing is bad, or something. A lot of the tracks were done in a rush, and in a tired state of mind! And yes. Recorded & mixed by Hoong Ern Ng in Grace Abundant Studios.

The Lyrics

01. Kau Yang Terindah

Electric Piano, Bass, Drums, Sequence – Hoong Ern
Saxophone – Simon Yau
Main vocal – Simon Yau
Backup vocal – Hoong Ern

Kau yang terindah di dalam hidup ini
Tiada Allah Tuhan yang seperti engkau
Besar perkasa penuh kemuliaan
Kau yang termanis di dalam hidup ini
Ku cinta kau lebih dari segalanya
Besar kasih setiamu kepadaku

Ku sembah kau ya Tuhan ku
Ku tinggikan namamu selalu
Semua lidah kan mengaku
Engkaulah Yesus Tuhan rajaku

Ku sembah kau ya Tuhan ku
Ku tinggikan namamu selalu
Tiada lutut tak bertelut
Menyembah Yesus Tuhan rajaku

And a loose English translation (Probably could’ve been done better):

You’re the most beautiful in this life
There is no other God like you
All powerful, full of glory
You’re the sweetest in this life
I love you more than anything else
Great is your faithfulness and love to me

I worship you, O my God
I lift up your name always
Every tongue will confess
You are Jesus, my God my King

I worship you, O my God
I lift up your name always
Every knees shall bow
worshipping Jesus, my God my King

02. What Child is This

Instruments & Arrangement – Hoong Ern

What Child is this who, laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce him through,
The Cross be borne for me, for you;
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh;
Come peasant, king to own Him.
The King of kings salvation brings;
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise, the song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby;
Joy, joy, for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

03. O Holy Night

Instruments & Orchestration – Hoong Ern
Vocal – Tina Hwa

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
‘Til He appear’d and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees! O, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born;
O night divine, O night, O night Divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friend.

04. [Bonus Track] Angels we have heard on high

Guitar & vocals – Simon Yau
Other instruments – Hoong Ern

Angels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing o’er the plain
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strain

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee,
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly songs?

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come adore on bended knee
Christ, the Lord, the newborn King.
